5 sunrise hikes around Corvara for early risers

The Most Beautiful Spots for a Magical Start to the Day

When the first rays of the sun touch the peaks of the Dolomites, the mountain world around Corvara reveals its most impressive side. Especially in the early morning hours, there is peace, clear views, and unique lighting moods. However, anyone planning a sunrise tour should be well prepared: a headlamp, weatherproof clothing in layers, sturdy hiking boots, as well as sufficient drinks and provisions are essential equipment.
1. Sunrise on the Sassongher – Corvara's Distinctive Local Mountain

The Sassongher (2,665 m) is the prominently visible local mountain of Corvara and counts among the most beautiful viewpoint peaks in Alta Badia. The ascent leads from Colfosco or the Col Pradat area through the Puez-Geisler Nature Park to the Sassongher saddle. In the upper section, there are short rope-secured passages that require surefootedness, a head for heights, and alpine experience.

Those who reach the summit in time for sunrise are rewarded with an impressive panoramic view of the Sella group, the Fanes group, and the entire Gadertal valley. Due to the challenging terrain, this tour is especially suitable for experienced mountain hikers.

2. Grande Cir at Sunrise: An Unforgettable Dolomite Panorama

Grande Cir (2,592 m), towering above Gardena Pass in the heart of the Dolomites, is one of the most popular panoramic peaks in Val Gardena thanks to its breathtaking views of the Sella Group, Sassolungo (Langkofel), and many other iconic Dolomite summits.
The ascent follows an easy protected trail that is also suitable for hikers with little or no via ferrata experience. The route involves approximately 450 meters of elevation gain and takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the summit.

To enjoy the sunrise from the top, it is recommended to leave from the Gardena Pass parking area at least two hours before sunrise. This allows enough time to reach the summit at a comfortable pace and find the perfect spot to watch the first rays of sunlight illuminate the Dolomites. The most convenient access point is Gardena Pass, which can be reached by car from Selva di Val Gardena or Corvara. Paid parking is available near the Frara Hut.

3. Dawn at Col Alt – the Relaxed Alternative

Those who want to experience the sunrise without long ascent times will find an ideal option at Col Alt. The scenic mountain above Corvara reaches about 1,980 meters in height and is accessible both on foot and via the well-known hiking trails around the town.

The tour is suitable for hikers with average fitness and offers wonderful views of Corvara, the Sella group, and the surrounding alpine pastures after a short walk. Especially for vacationers who want to start the day leisurely afterwards, Col Alt is an excellent choice.

4. Sunrise on the Pralongià Plateau – the Amphitheater of the Dolomites

The Pralongià Plateau is one of the most beautiful panoramic landscapes in Alta Badia. The extensive high plateau lies at about 2,100 meters and is often referred to as the "Amphitheater of the Dolomites." From here, there are unobstructed views of Marmolada, the Sella group, Sassongher, and the Fanes group.

The paths mostly run over gentle alpine meadows and wide hiking trails, so the tour is also suitable for less experienced mountain hikers. When the first rays of the sun bathe the surrounding peaks in warm light, some of the most beautiful morning moods of the region arise here.

5. Sunrise at Lago Boè – Reflections Amidst the Sella Group

Lago Boè, called Lech de Boè in Ladin, lies at about 2,275 meters in the heart of the Sella group. The small mountain lake is located near the mountain station of the Boè cable car and is reachable in a few minutes via an easy hiking trail.

In the early morning hours, the lake often lies calm and mirror-smooth between the bright Dolomite peaks. Especially in clear weather, the surrounding rock faces are impressively reflected in the water. The tour is also suitable for guests who do not want to undertake a long summit hike but still want to experience an unforgettable sunrise.

Whether a challenging summit tour on Sassongher, a high alpine experience on Piz Boè, or a relaxed sunrise at Col Alt, Pralongià Plateau, or Lago Boè: Around Corvara, early risers find numerous opportunities to get to know the Dolomites from their quietest and most beautiful side. With good planning, appropriate equipment, and an early start, the first sun rays over the mountains become an unforgettable holiday experience. The Sporthotel Panorama offers the ideal starting point for this in the heart of Alta Badia.
