10 bottles for wine tasting in Italy

One drop on your tongue is enough and the incomparable flavour spreads through your mouth, reaching every cell in your body and taking you on a journey of the senses. What you taste is not just fermented grapes, but many hours of sunshine, rich soils, the knowledge and hard work of the winegrowers.
Wines from Italy’s northernmost province, South Tyrol, play an important role even on international stages. On a wine tour through Italy, a stop-over in South Tyrol is therefore a must for every connoisseur! Our hotel in Corvara, South Tyrol, specialises on wines. Over many years, we have collected the best bottles from the region, as well as plenty from the rest of Italy and abroad. Here are 10 bottles that you should definitely not miss:

Italian white wines

A white wine is traditionally served with pasta dishes, starters, and fish. The best-known South Tyrolean white wines include Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay.

Gewürztraminer has an intense aroma of roses, cloves, lychee, and tropical fruit. It is named after the village of Tramin/Termeno and goes best with fish, vegetables, and blue cheese.
Our recommendation: Gewürztraminer 2018 Nußbaumer Kellerei Tramin

Pinot Blanc, on the other hand, scores with its flavours of apple, pear, lemon, and hay flowers. It is one of the most popular varieties and is served with starters, fish, and South Tyrolean dishes.
Our recommendation: Weißburgunder 2020 Sirmian Kellerei Nals & Margreid

Connoisseurs can taste pineapple, banana, vanilla, and butter in Chardonnay wines. Sometimes fruitier, sometimes softer, it goes well with white meat, Italian and South Tyrolean dishes.
Our recommendation: Chardonnay 2020 Alois Lageder

Italian red wines

A red wine is usually served with main courses and red meat. Among the South Tyrolean red wines that you should not miss on your wine vacation in Italy are Cabernet, Merlot and Lagrein.

The Cabernet is quite spicy and also smells of redcurrants and blackberries. This profound wine is enjoyed with meat dishes, especially venison and lamb, as well as hard cheeses.
Our recommendation: Cabernet 2018 Istrice Elena Walch

Merlot has been cultivated in South Tyrol for around 130 years. With its berry flavour, it is extremely soft and sensual. It is paired with veal, venison, beef, and hard cheese.
Our recommendation: Merlot 2017 Siebeneich Praedium Schreckbichl

This variety from Bolzano was almost extinct in the 1970s. Today it is enjoying increasing popularity. A good glass of Lagrein is enjoyed with venison, beef, and hard cheese.
Our recommendation: Lagrein 2016 Urban Tramin

Italian dessert wines

In our connoisseur hotel, you can also taste the best dessert wines from the region. Sweet or dessert wines have, as the name suggests, a strong sweetness and are served at the end of the meal, with the dessert or cheeseboard. Yellow Muscat and Red Muscat are our local varieties.

The Yellow Muscat tastes of nutmeg and citrus fruits. This versatile wine goes well with aperitifs, desserts, and mature blue cheeses.
Our recommendation: Goldmuskateller 2014 Quintessenz Passito giallo, Kellerei Kaltern

Originally from Sicily, Red Muscat is a full-bodied and aromatic sweet wine. It has an intense flavour of rose, lime tree, and nutmeg and it goes well with South Tyrolean desserts.
Our recommendation: Rosenmuskateller 2014 Moscato rosa, Ansitz Waldgries

Italian sparkling wines

No wine tasting in Italy would be complete without some sparkles. The original Prosecco comes from the Italian region of Veneto. According to some experts, Franciacorta from Lombardy can even be compared to Champagne. You can taste both on your wine holiday in Italy.

Prosecco di Valdobbiadene may only be cultivated on the area of 15 specific municipalities. Notes of quince, apple, peach, melon, and citrus are recognisable. It is the king of aperitifs.
Our recommendation: Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Rive di Refrontolo E.brut Santa Margherita

Franciacorta is particularly popular in Italy. The cultivation method is similar to that of champagne, but the Italian version is fruitier. Apart from the aperitif, it also goes well with desserts.
Our recommendation: Franciacorta Annamaria Clementi Cuvée Cà del Bosco
